POSITION SUMMARY: Maintains safety and emergency response on the ski hill.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Trained in avalanche awareness and control. Responsible for the safety of all skiers/snowboarders and to maintain the safety of Schweitzer's terrain. Marks or removes hazards; posts signs for dangerous or closed areas and difficult terrain. Reports areas that need grooming or repairs on ramps; will work with emergency, medical and first aid situations. Will carry explosives for avalanche work. Will be on call for lift failure or injury. Patrols areas on downhill skis. Must be a strong team player able to work well with co-workers under all conditions.

OTHER RESPONSIBILITIES : Must have or be willing to obtain extensive knowledge of Schweitzer Mountain Resort facilities and activities. Responsibilities are listed as guidelines and the position is not necessarily limited to these items.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS:

SKILLS: OEC, CPR, avalanche training, expert skiing skills

EDUCATION: English reading, writing and communication skills. High school diploma or equivalent, first aid and avalanche training required.

EXPERIENCE: Some patrol experience required, pro patrol experience preferred.

LICENSE NEEDED: None

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Must be able to ski for up to 8 hours per day. May sit up to hour per day; can go inside at will to warm up or rest. Will lift up to 25 lbs frequently; up to 100 lbs occasionally. Will lift boxes of dynamite, packs, and sleds; will bend and squat frequently; will climb, twist, and reach above shoulder level occasionally. Will use hands for grasping, pushing/pulling and fine manipulation. All sensory skills are required. Worksite is 20% inside and 80% outside. Hazards are skiing, pulling sleds, extreme weather conditions and avalanche explosives. Protective clothing is provided. Safety equipment used includes locator poles, earplugs, probe poles, and avalanche shovels.

MACHINES/TOOLS OPERATED: Sleds, shovels, probes, and explosives. First Aid equipment.

JUDGMENT/MENTAL COMPLEXITY: HIGH

REVIEW SCHEDULE: This position and the person filling it will be evaluated once a season.
